How to Verify an Alibaba Supplier: A 9-Step Checklist
Alibaba is a great place to find factories, but anyone can open a storefront. Before you send a deposit, run through this 9-step checklist to confirm that a supplier is real, capable and trustworthy.
Why verify an Alibaba supplier at all?
Alibaba lists millions of suppliers, from large factories to small trading companies and, occasionally, scammers. Verifying a supplier protects your deposit and your reputation. It also tells you whether you are talking to a manufacturer, which usually means better pricing and more control over quality.
Step 1: Understand the badges, but do not rely on them
- Verified Supplier means the company has passed checks by a third-party inspection company, such as business registration and an on-site review.
- Trade Assurance is Alibaba’s payment protection for eligible orders paid through the platform.
- Older Gold Supplier labels mostly show how long a company has paid for membership.
Badges are a good starting point, not proof. Many problems still happen with badged suppliers, so keep going.
Step 2: Check the business licence
Ask for a copy of the business licence. It shows the registered company name, the Unified Social Credit Code, the registered address and the business scope. You can look up the code on China’s National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System to confirm the company exists and is in good standing. Check that the business scope covers the product you are buying.
Step 3: Compare the company name, address and bank account
The name on Alibaba, the business licence, the invoice and the bank account should all match. If a supplier asks you to pay to a personal account or a different company, treat it as a red flag.
Step 4: Work out if it is a factory or a trading company
Trading companies are not bad, but you should know which one you are dealing with. Signs of a real factory include production photos and videos with workers and machinery, a business scope that says “manufacturing”, a factory address that is not in an office tower, and technical answers about materials and tooling. Our guide on sourcing agents in China explains the difference in more detail.
Step 5: Hold a live video call and factory tour
Ask for a live video call, not a recorded video. Request that they show the production line, the warehouse, the machines making your product and the company signboard. A real factory can do this easily. A scam rarely can.
Step 6: Order samples and test them
Pay for samples before placing a bulk order. Check materials, finish, measurements, packaging and function against your specification. Keep the sample as the reference for later quality inspections.
Step 7: Check reviews, history and export experience
Look at how long they have been on the platform, their response rate, order history and customer reviews. Ask about previous export experience to your country and for references. A supplier who has shipped to the USA, UK or Australia will understand the paperwork.
Step 8: Consider a third-party factory audit
For larger orders, hire an independent auditor to visit the factory and confirm its capacity, equipment, working conditions and quality systems. We offer a factory audit in China that reports directly to you, not to the factory.
Step 9: Pay safely and inspect before the final payment
- Use Trade Assurance or another protected payment method for your first orders where possible.
- Never pay 100% upfront. A common split is a deposit to start production and the balance after inspection.
- Book a pre-shipment inspection before releasing the final payment.
- Keep all agreements in writing: specifications, price, lead time and penalties.
Red flags to walk away from
- Prices far below every other quote.
- Refusal to do a live video call or provide a business licence.
- Pressure to pay quickly or to move the conversation to personal chat apps only.
- Different company names on the quote, invoice and bank account.
- Stock photos that appear on many other suppliers’ pages.

Check the business licence and its credit code, confirm the company name matches the invoice and bank account, hold a live video tour, order samples and, for larger orders, hire a third-party factory audit.
What does Verified Supplier mean on Alibaba?
It means the supplier has passed checks by an independent inspection company, such as business registration and an on-site review. It is a useful signal but not a guarantee.
