FCL vs LCL

FCL vs LCL shipping from China to the USA

Not every shipment needs a full container. We help you choose between a dedicated container (FCL) and a shared one (LCL) based on your volume, budget, and timeline โ€” then handle the booking, loading, and paperwork either way.

We ship ocean freight from Ningbo, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou to the main US ports, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle, New York and New Jersey, Savannah and Houston. If you are planning to import from China to the USA, we can also source the product and inspect it at the factory before the container is loaded.

FCL โ€” Full Container Load

Your own dedicated 20ft or 40ft container. Best for larger volumes โ€” faster port handling since there’s no consolidation.

LCL โ€” Less than Container Load

Your cargo shares a container with other shipments. Best for smaller volumes โ€” you only pay for the space you use.

Questions

Sea Freight China to USA: FAQ

If your cargo fills more than roughly 60-70% of a container, FCL is usually more cost-effective. Smaller volumes are cheaper to ship as LCL.

Yes โ€” export clearance in China and import clearance at destination are both included as part of the service.

Yes, our optional DDP service covers last-mile delivery from the port straight to your door.

Port to port, sea freight from China to the USA usually takes about 2-5 weeks. West Coast ports such as Los Angeles and Long Beach are generally faster than East Coast ports such as New York and Savannah. Allow extra time for pickup, customs clearance and delivery to your door.

The cost depends on the container size (20ft or 40ft) or, for LCL, the volume (CBM) and weight, plus the origin and destination ports, the season and any customs charges. Send us your cargo details and we will quote a total door-to-door cost.

LCL can take a few days longer, because your cargo is consolidated with other shipments before loading and deconsolidated after it arrives. It is usually the cheaper option for smaller shipments, since you only pay for the space you use.

You find and verify a supplier, agree the product and price, inspect the goods, then ship. As the importer you also need a customs bond, an Importer Security Filing (ISF) submitted before the cargo is loaded, and to pay duties based on the product’s HS code. We can prepare the paperwork and manage the shipment from the factory to your warehouse.

We ship to the main US ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle, New York and New Jersey, Savannah and Houston, with onward trucking to your address.

Look for a forwarder with a team on the ground in China, clear door-to-door quotes that include customs, and one point of contact for the whole shipment. We work this way and can also handle sourcing and inspection if you need them.

Yes. Once the container is booked we send you the booking and bill of lading details and track the vessel and container until arrival, then update you on customs clearance and delivery to your door.

Ocean rates move with demand, vessel capacity, fuel costs, port congestion and the time of year. Peak season before major holidays is usually the most expensive. We watch the market and can advise when to book to avoid the worst spikes.

For heavier or bulkier cargo, sea freight is usually much cheaper per kilo. Air freight costs more but is far faster, so it suits urgent, light or high-value goods. We can quote both so you can compare the total landed cost.
